1506–1555

Charles V

Charles V succeeded his father, Philip the Handsome, as the “natural prince” of the principalities forming the Netherlands in 1506. He regularly spent time in his palace in Brussels and took a keen interest in the changes made to it. The importance he attached to the central location of Brussels and its palace is illustrated by his decision to be emancipated there in 1515 and to abdicate there in 1555.
