1553–1610

Henry IV of France

King of Navarre before becoming King of France in 1589, Henry IV is the first French king of the Bourbon branch. His first goal as king is to restore peace within his country, devastated by the French wars of religion. He does so by changing his faith to Catholicism and by enacting the Edit de Nantes, thereby putting an end to the civil war. Concerned about the wellbeing of his subjects he is one of the most popular French kings both during and after his rule, but was killed on May 14th 1610 by Francis Ravaillac, a Catholic fanatic.
