1660–1715

Louis XIV

In 1661 at the beginning of his personal reign, Louis XIV showed a great interest in his father’s hunting lodge. First working on the formal gardens, he expanded the palace in three building campaigns (1661-1668, 1668-1678, 1678-1710). Renowned for its entertainments - festivities and hunting parties - the palace of Versailles became the official seat of the government and the main residence of the Court on May 6th, 1682.
