It was during the Council of Clermont on 27th November 1095 that Pope Urban II preached the First Crusade. He denounced the suffering of the Eastern Christians and asked Christians to unite under the banner of the Church and go forth to deliver the Holy Land. In this way he also hoped to reinforce his power by uniting Christianity against a common enemy.
