Philip the Bold, Duke of Burgundy, inherited the County of Flanders in 1384. Through marriage, inheritance, purchase and conquest, his descendents gradually gained sovereignty over the principalities forming modern-day Belgium, with the exception of the Bishopric of Liege (which nonetheless sometimes fell under the influence of its powerful neighbours).
