1482–1555

The Habsburg Netherlands

Duchess Mary of Burgundy married Maximilian of Habsburg, future Holy Roman Emperor, after the death of her father Charles the Bold in 1477. Following her premature death in 1482, the Netherlands (modern-day Belgium and the Netherlands) passed to the Habsburgs and remained under their sovereignty until the French Revolution.
