Between 1792 and 1795, the Austrian Netherlands and the principality of Liege changed sovereigns several times. They were conquered and re-conquered successively by the French and the Austrians, and were definitively annexed to the French Republic in 1795. The former principalities were divided into nine departments based on the former principalities, foreshadowing modern-day provinces.
