The Archdukes

Infanta Isabella received sovereignty over the Netherlands in 1599 on the occasion of her marriage to Archduke Albert of Austria, as a dowry from her father Philip II King of Spain. Their reign was a period of precarious political peace and relative economic prosperity. The arts flourished, however, particularly religious art following the creation of numerous orders and the consecration of new churches.
